Woven vs. Non-Woven: Choosing the Right Geotextile

Geotextiles are the workhorses of modern civil and environmental construction — but “geotextile” covers two very different families of fabric. Choosing the wrong one can undermine an entire installation.
Woven geotextiles
Woven fabrics are made by interlacing tape or filament yarns at right angles. The result is high tensile strength and low elongation, which makes them ideal for separation and reinforcement under roads, parking lots and laydown yards where load-bearing capacity matters most.
Non-woven geotextiles
Non-woven fabrics are needle-punched or thermally bonded into a random web of fibers. That structure gives them excellent water flow and filtration, so they shine in drainage, erosion control and applications where water needs to pass through while soil is held back.
A quick rule of thumb
- Carrying load or stabilizing soft ground → woven
- Filtering and draining water → non-woven
